- Airline staff verified my itinerary at check-in.
- At Shanghai Pudong Airport, border officers asked for my onward ticket and hotel info.

Is Emeishan, Scichuan a allowed area to visit? It is not shown in the table. I plan to observe a worldwide Kungfu martial art competition in October there. Is there map which covers the area in general?
My itinerary is from US to ChengDu by air, to Emeishan to Guilin by ground transportation, to HongKong by train, and back to US within a week. The planned duration in China is 8 days. Does it qualify 240 hour transit visa free plan?

Hi. I am flying to Beijing, staying in China for a one week tour, then a cruise to Japan for a week from Shanghai, and returning to Sganghai to fly home. Does this qualify me for 240 hour visa free pleae?

My trip:
1. Indonesia – Kuala lumpur – Beijing – Irkutsk. But on 2 SEPARATE tickets (Indonesia to beijing on Malaysian airline. Beijing to Irkutsk on S7 airline. Does this route qualify for 240 hours transit visa?
2. Then on the way back: Irkutsk – Beijing – Shanghai – Bangkok – Indonesia. Again on 2 separate tickets.
So I will applying for free visa TWICE. Correct?
Yes, you are correct. You will receive two 240-hour transit visa stickers. To qualify for this policy, a connecting flight ticket is not required, SEPARATE tickets is ok . You only need to present your departing flight ticket from China each time you enter. Enjoy your time in China!
If I am flying JFK to Beijing with a layover in Japan (not going through Japan customs) , and then flying from Shanghai to Tokyo for a few days, and then back to JFK is this ok? My concern is the layover in Japan on the way to Beijing.
Your last flight entering mainland China is from Japan to China, so your itinerary will not qualify with the 240-hour transit visa-free policy. You can either change your travel plans or apply for a Chinese visa.
so even though my ticket is JFK to Beijing the China customs will just see the last leg from Japan to China?
yes.
last question what about USA -> Beijing -> Chongqing-> Shanghai -> Hong Kong -> USA. Would this be ok?
That should be ok, as long as your flight from the USA to Beijing does not have a layover in Hong Kong.

Taiyuan is also an eligible visa-free city…we just didn’t know if you have to fly into all of the eligible ports or if taking a train is okay once you’re in the country. We’re so confused by what happens once you’re able to leave the airport in your arrival city. This person is flying from the US to Beijing, taking the train to Taiyuan, then returning by train to Beijing, then flying to Japan, then to the US.

If your actual route is: arriving in Shanghai by cruise and then directly flying to London, this route meets the requirements of the 240-hour visa-free transit policy.

At the Hong Kong airport, we will take a car ride via the Hong Kong/Zhuhai/Macau bridge to Gongbei Port, then into Zhuhai. I did not see the Gongbei Port listed under Guangdong Province’s ports.

Hello,
I am using a US passport. I have separate one-way tickets. The first is from the US to China (Shanghai). The second is from China (Shanghai) to South Korea, less than 10 days later. The last is from South Korea back to the US. My questions are:
1. The tickets are separate, one-way, and booked through different airlines and websites. Is that fine?
2. I will be landing in Shanghai and going to Hangzhou via ground travel (I will come back to Hangzhou to fly to South Korea). Is that fine?
Thank you

Hi,
Wanted some insights on a trip I’m taking this winter and see if this trip qualifies for 240 transit free visa:
USA –> Taiwan –> China (kunming) –> China (Hangzhou) –> HongKong (2 hr layover on way to US) –> US
I have a couple questions:
– Under 240 hr transit free visa, can I enter China and exit China from different airport/port?
– Does a 2 hour layover in Hong Kong count as a third country (I wouldn’t leave the airport/exit customs)? (Or do I have to leave the airport/customs, in order for HK to count as a third country)
Thank you!
hi, Ellen, your itineray is qualify for 240 hours transit visa free policy, 2 hours layover count as third country or region. enjoy your trip.

hi, Grace, HKG-PEK-HKG not transit, this itinerary not eligible for 240 hours transit visa free policy.

yes, you are right, if you stopover HK, then you will qualify for 240 hours transit visa free policy.
My initial route was : Manchester UK – Beijing (direct flight), Beijing to Xi’an, Xi’an to Hangzhou, Hangzhou to Shanghai, Shanghai back to Manchester UK , but i’m not sure this would be eligible as there is no 3rd country.
However if the return journey from Shanghai back to Manchester went via another country like Amsterdam or Abu Dhabi would it qualify ?
Hi,Jennifer, UK – China – UK no third country involved, so will not qualify for 240 hours transit visa free policy. but if you return flight had stopover at Amsterdam or Abu Dhabi or any other countries, you will be eligible for use 240 hours transit visa free policy, thanks

I am a Canadian citizen. I want to visit Shanghai for 3 days. I read it’s visa free. Do i still need to apply for a visa that is free of charge? Do i need any document to leave the airport in Dubai, where i live? Thank you
hi, Leila, Sorry for later response, for use 240 hours transit visa free policy, be sure your itinerary meet the transit requirement. when you check in at Dubai, the airline will ask your the flight to exit mainland of China, to check if you meet requirement. when you arrive Shanghai, the custom will also ask for you exit fight.
I’m curious if you go to Hainan under the 30 day visa-free policy can you still do the 10 day visa-free transit afterwards?
Hong Kong -> Hainan (30 days) -> Shenzhen (10 days) -> Hong Kong (via Ferry)
Also can you transit for another 10 days whilst returning from a third country?
Hong Kong -> Guiyang (10 days) -> Thailand -> Shenzhen (10 days) -> Hong Kong (via Ferry)
hi, Matt, You have raised a good question. Regarding whether traveling from Hainan to Shenzhen qualifies under the transit visa policy, we are uncertain. We recommend inquiring with Chinese border control authorities. Based on our understanding, it is highly likely that it does not qualify. If you do not receive a Certain answer, we don’t advise to taking such a risk.
As for the itinerary Hong Kong → Guiyang (10 days) → Thailand → Shenzhen (10 days) → Hong Kong (via ferry), this definitely qualifies under the 240-hour transit visa-free policy. thanks

Hello,
Very Informative. I am traveling from US to China with layover in Korea for few hour before flight to Shenzhen. I am flying back from Shenzen to Korea. Staying in Korea for 2 day before departing for US. Since I am only transiting through Korea on my way to Shenzhen. I assumed I am eligible for 240hr transit visa.
Is my assumption correct?

or via Ferry from Shenzhen to Hongkong and then flight to ICN
There are no restrictions on exiting Mainland China. You can leave by land, air, or ferry as long as you hold a valid ticket for departure.
Do I also need ticket for train or ferry from Shenzhen to Hongkong or that I can purchase once I am in Shenzhen?
when you enter China, you will be required to show your outgoing ticket. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase it in advance—either an e-ticket or a physical ticket is acceptable.

I am Ukrainian citizen, I am flying from Sydney (Australia) to Warsaw (Poland) through Beijing International airport, I have to stay long hours around 22 hours between my flies, Do I available for 240 h transit free? What will happen if my flight is late more than 24 h?
Hi,Dear U, yes, you are eligible for 240 h transit visa free policy, enjoy your trip.
With the below airline flights does this qualify for the China’s 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit Policy or do we need to have China visa before we fly out.
Does going to Shenzhen by ferry or by train make a difference in terms of how the transit policy is classified because in your example on you website one is valid entry while the other is invalid as below”
Valid entry is per your website example :
US → Hong Kong → [Ferry] → Shenzhen → Shanghai → US
(Valid: Entering China via ferry from Hong Kong)
Invalid entry is per your website example :
USA → Hong Kong → Train to Shenzhen → Shanghai → USA
(Land border not eligible for transit policy)
Can you kindly help clarify if we qualify for the China’s 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit Policy based on our itinerary below:
Our Flight plans are as follows”
USA → Hong Kong (transit only)→ Thailand → Vietnam → Hong Kong going directly to Shenzhen China → Hong Kong → USA
Our stay in Shenzhen will be exactly 10 days from entry date to departure out of Hong Kong.
Thank you so much.
Hi, Ezz, You itinerary HK to Shenzhen to HK will not qualify for 240 hours transit visa free policy, there is no third country or region involved , if you can fly to Shenzhen from Vietnam and exit to HK, then you will qualify.
Great website with recent information. I hope to be able to use the 240 hour visa free policy to fly from the US to China, returning to Korea. But, I am skeptical that I will be able to convince Delta Airlines that I don’t need a visa. Any advice or experience with this question? Thanks.
hi, Mr. Keith, This policy has been in place for over a year, and all major airlines flying to China are well aware of it, so there’s no need to worry too much. However, if you still have concerns, you can refer to the official announcement from the Chinese government. I have attached the announcement from the website of the Chinese Embassy in the United States for your reference: https://us.china-embassy.gov.cn/eng/lsfw/zj/qz2021/202412/t20241217_11495647.htm.
I intend travelling back to the UK from Japan via Shanghai. If I have a confirmed ticket from Shanghai PVG to LHR with British Airways, but without seat number, would that qualify for Visa Free Transit? The seat number would be allocated within 24 hours of departure when I check in on line. Must there be a seat number at the time I would land at Shanghai from Osaka, Japan?
Thank you.
Hi, Malcolm, When you enter China, Custom officer will only check your ticket information to leave China and will not verify whether you have a seat. Please relax and enjoy your trip.
Checking the following as US citizen

I read the note on multiple entries into China recommends getting the 10 year visa instead of using the 10 day pass, but we are planning to break up 2 weeks in China by popping down to Hong Kong for 3 days and then going back into China. Basically the trip would be Japan – China – Honk Kong – China – Japan. Would this be a legitimate use of the 10 day pass?

Hi Visit China Visa Center,
I am a US citizen who would like to travel to China for 9 days only (less than 240 hrs). I have a flight that takes me from DTW > PVG (with a 3-hr layover in Korea (ICN) and a return flight from PVG > DTW (direct), would this qualify for the 240 hour visa-free transit policy? There would be no passport stamp in ICN and no exiting of the airport in ICN. Thank you!
hi, Angela, yes, your itinerary qualify for 240 hours transit visa free policy. Enjoy Your trip.
Hi Visit China Visa Center,
(Sorry if this is a redundant post, I can’t tell if my prior one posted).
My fiance is a US citizen who wants to travel to Shanghai, China for 9 days to meet my family for the first time using the 240-hour Visa-Free Transit Policy. He has a ticket that goes from DTW > PVG (with a 3-hr layover in ICN) and a direct flight from PVG > DTW. He will not be spending any time in ICN, and will only be transferring to another flight through the airport.
Can you please confirm if this flight qualifies for the 240-hr Visa-Free Transit Policy? What does he need to bring for China immigration. Also, what does he need to have with him for the US to let him board the flight without a visa?
Thank you in advance for your help.
hi, Angela, yes, your itinerary Korea – China- US qualify for 240 hours transit visa free policy. China 240 transit visa free policy only check on the last leg of your journey and the first flight segment after leaving China. In your example, regardless of whether you have a layover or a stop in South Korea, when entering China, you will be considered as arriving from South Korea. and The immigration officers will only look at your first flight segment after departing from mainland China.
Need help. We were originally flying into Shanghai, take a cruise that goes to Japan and then back to Shanghai. From there, we were going to visit Korea. Well…the cruise line has changed our Japan stops to Korea Stops. Our original itinerary was:
USA -> Shanghai -> Japan -> Shanghai -> Korea -> USA
Now, we are going:
USA -> Shanghai -> Korea -> Shanghai -> Korea -> Japan -> USA
USA -> Shanghai -> Korea is no issues for the 240 hour transit visa.
The problem is when we get back to Shanghai from Korea and then fly back to Korea.
Can we do Korea -> Shanghai -> Hong Kong (Layover for 1 hour) -> Korea?
Thanks
hi, Tiffany, Regarding your concerned itinerary , there are quite a few cases the tourists use the 240-hour transit visa-free policy sucessfully . From a general understanding, when a cruise arrives, the customs authorities will not consider your come from country of origin of cruise, it is classified as a third region and not as coming from a specific country.
However, I am not 100% sure about this point, nor have I confirmed it with the Chinese customs authorities. If you are worried, it is best to contact Chinese customs to confirm for yourself. Thank you.
Hi
I have Malaysia passport and my children have British passport.
UK – Shanghai – Malaysia – UK, can my children qualify for the 240-hour Visa-Free Transit Policy ?

Hi,
Can I confirm if the following is possible with 240 hour transit visa?
Day 1 UK to Hong Kong
Day 3 Hong Kong ferry to Shenzen
Day 5 Shenzen train to Hong Kong

Thanks for your help
hi, lisa, you itinerary Day 3 and Day 5 HK- Mainland Of China- HK not qualify for 240 hour transit visa free policy, the transit should be A-B-C. If you change Day 5 from ShenZhen to Macau, then mostly you will be qualify.
Hi,
Thank you for above, would either of the following be allowable?
Option 1:
Day 1 UK to Hong Kong, airport ferry to Shenzhen
Day 4 Shenzhen train to Hong Kong
Day 7-8 Macau
Day 10 Hong Kong to Uk
Or
Option 2:
Day 1 UK to Hong Kong
Day 3 Hong Kong to Macau
Day 4 Macau to Shenzhen via ferry
Day 7 Shenzhen to Hong Kong via train
Day 10 Hong Kong to UK
Thank you for your time
hi, Lisa, option 2 will qualify. enjoy your trip.
what if the first country and the third country are by airports that are very close together, does distance matter too?
can I take a flight from Vienna, Austria – Shanghai- Bratislava, Slovakia or Malmö, Sweden – Beijing – Copenhagen, Sweden. Not everyone had months of annual leave, if I could add two weeks Australia to it, I wouldn’t hesitate a single minute. Would that raise any suspicion that it would look like I was cheating their 144 visa rules?? it sounds too good to be true that way, because I would be back in Sweden under one hour. It is as if the question have never been asked before and I have never found an answer to this.
signed,
Harald
Hi,Harald, Entry and exit must be to different countries, regardless of the distance.
Is there any paperwork to do in advance or can you just fly in and ask for the 240hr visa on arrival? I would be flying SFO>Seoul>Japan>Shanghai>SFO.
hi, J, you will need show your tickets from mainland of China to US(SFO) when you arrive shanghai from Japan.
